Eyebrow Dos & Don’ts: Sparse Brows

#1 – Don’t draw in your brows
The best way to create brows where there are none is to use gentle strokes. You can use a brow pencil or brow shadow – the key is to sketch the product on. DO NOT DRAW LINES. You will look like a cartoon character, and more likely than not, you will appear to look very sad or very angry.
#2 – Do consider brow shape before getting started
Before taking a pencil or brush to your face, stand back and look at yourself. Figure out where your brows should begin, arch and end.

Here’s a simple trick that will help you shape your brows:

1- Hold a pencil vertically against the side of your nose (against the nostril, extending up passed the inner corner of your eye). That’s where your brow should start.

2- While holding the pencil next to your nostril, slowly tip the pencil so that it sits against your nostril and goes along the outside of your iris (that’s the colored part of your eye). This is where your arch should be.
3- Keeping the base of the pencil next to your nostril, tilt the pencil a little further, so that it sits right passed the outer edge of your eye. This is where your brow should end.

#3 – Don’t use dark brown or black to fill brows
In fact, unless you have blonde hair (go with taupe), your brow product should be a few shades lighter than your hair color.

Dark brown and black brow fillers will give you an unnaturally severe look. If you have brown or black hair, use a soft brown. Trust me, you’ll thank me.

#4 – Do experiment with your brows (filling, NOT plucking)
Getting your brows right can be pretty tricky, especially if they are sparse to begin with. Experiment with pencils and eyebrow brushes. See what works for you. Your best bet is to start off subtle. If you go from no eyebrows to Brooke Shields over night, it might be a little jarring.

#5 – Don’t obsess over symmetry
I once heard someone say that eyebrows are not twins, they’re more like sisters. That stuck with me. The truth is, no face is exactly symmetrical on both sides (not even really really pretty people). Just do your best to get an even,  natural look.

Good luck!
