7 things you didn’t know about organic beauty

September is fast becoming synonymous with going organic as the Soil Association’s Organic September campaign gets bigger every year and to celebrate Organic Beauty Week Yanar Alkayat brings you 7 surprising facts about organic beauty

If your shopping basket is already filled with organic vegetables, coffee and tea then it’s time to go green with your beauty too. Here are eight things you need to know about going organic with your beauty choices.
1. Organic is not just a buzzword for posh chocolate, cotton or coffee – it’s a genuine movement that promotes sustainable farming without the use of chemicals and pesticides that might cause harm to people, the environment or us.
2. Organic beauty comes back to farming too which means the plants and herbs used in formulas have been grown without the use of pesticides.  That’s not only better for the soil, it also produces a healthier plant which means more potent products.

3. 4.  A logo with an accredited organisation (not a logo that a brand has created itself) is the only way to ensure products, ingredients and manufacturing processes have met strict and independent standards, guarantees quality and ethical values. No logo means no guarantee you’re buying a truly organic product.

5. There are several certification bodies but there will soon be just one Different levels of organic and natural certification standards have resulted in confusion so five of the leading certifiers in Europe have created a new standard called COSMOS. Look out for this logo in the near future.

6. Some of our favourite certified organic beauty brands include: Neal’s Yard Remedies, Odylique, Therapi Honey Skincare, Pai Skincare, Voya, Spiezia Organics, Green People, and Botanicals. Find the full list of beauty brands certified under the Soil Association here.
7. Join Organic Beauty Week with one of the activities nationwide.
